Rosca de Reyes

Mexicans serve Rosca de Reyes or King’s Cake on January 6. “Rosca” means wreath and “reyes” means kings. The Rosca de Reyes has an oval shape to symbolize a crown and has a small doll inside, which represents baby Jesus. Kransekage

Kransekage, literally wreath cake, is a cake tower composed of many concentric rings of cake layered atop one another, and they are made for New Year’s Eve and other special occasions in Denmark and Norway. The cake is made using marzipan and can be decorated with ornaments, flags, and crackers.

Oliebollen

In the Netherlands, fried oil balls, or oliebollen, are traditionally consumed on New Year’s Eve. They are doughnut-like dumplings, made by dropping a scoop of dough spiked with currants or raisins into a deep fryer and then dusted with powdered sugar.

Banitsa

People eat the traditional Bulgarian pastry banitsa on New Year’s Eve in Bulgaria. It is made by layering a mixture of whisked egg, natural yogurt and pieces of white brined cheese between filo pastry and then baking it in the oven. 

There is an interesting tradition that Bulgarians follow. Fortune is baked into banitsa on little pieces of paper and whichever fortune you get in your piece is what predicted for your fortune.

Vasilopita

Vasilopita, this Greek cake is served on New Year’s Day and in some other parts of Eastern Europe. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a hidden coin or trinket in your slice, promising 12 months of prosperity. But don’t fret, everyone who is gathered to slice the cake is said to receive good luck in their household in the coming year.

Cornbread

Cornbread, made with cornmeal, is a favorite at most Southern American tables. However, on New Year’s Eve, a side of cornbread with your meal is consumed to bring fortune. The bread’s golden-backed color is considered extra lucky as far as monetary success is concerned.
