Choco Chip Coo-Kees!

“Good morning, little mister! What do you want to order?” “Good morning! I want to order five choco chip coo-kees! Thank you!” “Okay! Seems like our little mister loves choco chip cookie.” “Yes! Yes! I eat choco chip coo-kee every day!”

From a little kid to an adult, who doesn’t love a yummy chocolate chip cookie! Chocolate chip cookie reigns as Americans’ favorite kind of cookie.  Coffee lovers all over the world love to have this cookie with their go-to coffee. Kids love to have it with milk. The typical chocolate chip cookie recipe has flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and soda, eggs, butter, milk, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips. Nuts, peanut butter, and other ingredients can be added to make it more flavorsome.

Believe it or not, everyone’s favorite chocolate chip cookie is now 84 years old! The chocolate chip cookie was invented by American chefs Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides in 1938. They invented the recipe during the period when they owned the Toll House Inn, in Whitman, Massachusetts. These cookies were originally called Toll House crunch cookies. An interesting fact is that this cookie was created by accident. Ruth Wakefield added broken chocolate bar pieces into her cookie batter thinking that they would melt. Instead, the classic dessert was born.

On 20 March 1939, Nestlé took this inventive idea to a bigger level by buying the recipe and paying Ruth Wakefield with a lifetime supply of chocolates. However, Nestlé still prints the original recipe on the back of the packet. The craze for chocolate chip cookies spread throughout Massachusetts during World War II when the families who were serving care packages included the cookies in the packages.

Every ‘Friends’ lover might remember the reference to Toll House cookies in the 3rd episode of season 7 where Phoebe claimed that her family held the secret recipe for the best-ever chocolate chip cookies passed by her grandmother but later Monica discovered it was actually the Nestlé Toll House cookie recipe.

There is a debate that the mother abbess of the convent of San Jerónimo in Mexico City, named Sor Andrea de la Encarnación, baked the first chocolate chip cookie in 1697 which the Americans disputed. The ingredients were: flour, butter, sugar, vanilla, and bittersweet cacao. The name of this cookie was ‘Galletas Dules’.

Chocolate chip cookie is particularly appreciated by the French even though it was originated from the Americans. It is found in almost every bakery and cafe in Paris; where it is known as biscuits aux pépites de chocolate.

The 4th of August is celebrated as National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day in the United States.
