Waffles and Pancakes: Breakfast Items to Start Your Happy Day!

Whenever it’s a cozy and warm weekend morning, we think of treating ourselves with crispy and sweet waffles or soft pancakes which melt in our mouths. Both waffles and pancakes are staple breakfast items in western countries and nowadays these are gaining popularity in our country day by day.

History of Waffles

Waffles have been around for a long time. Food experts think they go back to ancient Greece. There, chefs roasted flat cakes between metal plates fixed to long wooden handles. The Greeks called these cakes obelios, and they weren’t as sweet as modern waffles. The Catholic Church made flat wafers, called oublies, out of grain flour and water in Europe many years later.

Later, other ingredients—such as spices, cream, honey, and butter—made their way into the recipes for oublie batter. Adding rising agents made the wafers thicker. These wafers soon became waffles.

In the 15th century, the Dutch began using rectangular plates with a grid pattern to cook waffles. Although no one knows for sure, experts believe the grid pattern we know today was a way to cook less batter over a greater surface area.

We give the Dutch credit for bringing the waffle to the U.S., too. It would be a while before waffle irons were common, though. The first patent for a waffle iron went to Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, New York, in 1869.

Today, many people eat waffles without the use of iron and they use a toaster.

History of pancakes

Pancakes have been around for centuries and are a part of multiple cultures. Researchers have found that people enjoyed pancakes as part of their daily meals as far back as 30,000 years ago. The word pancake was coined in the 15th century and became standard in 19th century America, but before that, they were referred to as Indian cakes, hoecakes, hotcakes, johnnycakes, journey cakes, buckwheat cakes, griddle cakes, or flapjacks.

It’s difficult to pinpoint when pancakes were invented as many countries have some form of pancakes as part of their cultures. The first recorded mention of pancakes was in 600 BC from a poet in ancient Greece. This breakfast treat was made of wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk which is a little different from the pancakes we know today.

However, while the first reference of pancakes came from ancient Greece, variations of pancakes existed in most countries around the world for centuries in some form as a breakfast food or treat similar to, but sweeter than, bread. Due to this, it’s hard to suggest that ancient Greeks were the inventors of pancakes, they may have just been the first culture to record the tasty breakfast treat.

Easy recipe for waffles and pancakes

The best waffles are crisp on the edges but a little fluffy in the middle. A basic waffle includes all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, milk, butter and vanilla extract and it can be doused in maple, chocolate or other syrups.

Step 1- Firstly, in a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Preheat the waffle iron to the desired temperature.

Step 2- Then in a separate bowl, beat the egg and stir in the milk, butter and vanilla extract.

Step 3- Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredient mixture and beat until blended.

Step 4- Ladle the batter into a preheated waffle iron and cook the waffles until it turns out golden and crisp.

Step 5- Add maple or any other syrup to make the waffle flavorful.

Fluffy pancakes include ingredients you likely have in your kitchen, like all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, milk, salt, butter and egg.

Step 1- Stir the dry ingredients together.

Step 2- Beat the egg, add mix the wet ingredients together and then mix this with the dry ingredients.

Step 3- scoop the batter onto a hot pan.

Step 4- Cook for two to three minutes, then flip. Continue cooking until it turns brown on both sides.

Step 5- add toppings, such as butter, maple syrup, honey, jams, sweetened whipped cream or chocolate syrup to put in the extra taste.
